Our Creative Director Abi Perry-Jones was invited again to lend her design expertise to join the judging panel for the Publican Awards last week. The shortlisted venues for the Best New Pub/Bar 2018 category were all really strong contenders for the award. The winner of the category will be announced at the Publican Awards Dinner on the 13th March. Here’s our brief low down on each entry;
The alchemist – media city, manchester

A futuristic gold roofed building designed especially for The Alchemist located on a bridge overlooking the water between Media City and The Lowery Theatre. Including a bar that wraps round to the outside of the building and a fully glazed facade which makes the most of this location.
Canova hall – brixton, london
Instagram: @canovahall Facebook: @Canovahall
This bar is proving popular with “London’s next generation of creatives” who use the space for “hot-desking” during the day. Gin is distilled on site and the wood-fired pizza oven and kitchen space is open to the bar. The interior is influenced by an industrial style with vintage accents. Moveable screens form semi private bookable spaces.
Central oven & shaker – newcastle

With the inspiration for the interior design stemming from the 1950s/60s Italy, the interior is warm and inviting. Located close to the train station and within an area popular with students, the freshly made pizzas from the wood-fired oven are proving hugely popular alongside a strong cocktail offer.
Impossible – manchester

To make the “impossible possible” is the operator Tokyo Industries’ philosophy, so dishes such as kangaroo tacos, spirits frozen to minus 74 degrees and a lickable champagne bubble machine are completely fitting. The quirky and in part, dramatic interior incorporates a Gin Loft on a mezzanine level. Booths and private areas are available to hire along with an underground theatre space which becomes an immersive nightclub at the weekends.
The half moon – herne hill, london
Twitter: @TheH alfMoonPub Instagram:@thehalfmoonpub
Facebook:@TheHalfMoonPub
A lovingly restored Grade II* listed pub with a bar constructed to look like the original Victorian design. New bi-folding doors open up to a great external space, which includes a barbecue shack, fire pit and a mix of seating styles. Part of the building has been converted to letting bedrooms and also a function space. The Half Moon is now well loved by the local community.
The roebuck inn – mobberly, cheshire
This Grade II listed building holds much character and has been restored as a cosy inn with six rustic boutique letting bedrooms, a ‘neighbourhood bistro’ and tiered terraced and fragrant gardens. The interior style has a homely welcoming feel attracting locals for a drink at the bar, as a dining destination and also often as a wedding venue.
